Laser hair removal

Cynosure Laser Elite Plus® - Alexandrite and Yag

Laser hair removal is now an efficient and reliable reference technique.

Laser hair removal uses “selective photothermolysis” to target the hairs only: they are heated selectively to destroy them without affecting the surrounding tissue.

A laser is a beam of light specifically absorbed by the brown pigment in the hair shaft and root. This beam is converted into heat that will destroy the hair root. The hair follicle cycle comprises 3 phases. The growth phase (anagen) is the laser's real target. The hair is attached to its root, so the laser beam travels down to the root and destroys it.

Therefore all the hairs must have gone through this phase to be able to be destroyed with the laser. Around 10 to 20% of the hairs in the area treated will be eliminated during each session.

Treatment:

Laser hair removal can be used for hairs on the body (underarms, bikini, legs, back, shoulders) or on the face (upper lip, chin).

During each session the entire area will be treated, the hairs “burnt” and regrowth will only occur 2 to 3 weeks after the session.

Number of sessions and timeframe:

5-8 sessions may be needed.

The length of a session varies according to the size of the area being treated. A warm sensation is experienced during the session. An anaesthetic cream is applied.

The laser is effective in 90% of patients with black or brown hairs.

The time between sessions varies from 4 to 12 weeks depending on the area.

Pre- and post-treatment advice:

Certain precautions are necessary before and after each session:

  • Before: it is essential to avoid tanning and pulling out the hairs using wax, tweezers or an electric epilator. The areas to be treated should be shaved or a depilatory cream applied. It is not necessary to let your hairs grow out.
  • After: avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks after each session, protect and moisturize your skin.

Pregnant women should not use this technique, nor should people with tanned skin, due to a risk of temporary depigmentation. It is essential to wait until your tan has disappeared before laser treatment.

Laser hair removal can also be used to treat hirsutism.
